Your First Wax: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

If you’re booking your first wax appointment first of all, welcome. We love a smooth skin era.

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous before your first wax. The good news: when you know what to expect and how to prepare, your appointment will be smoother, more comfortable, and give you better results.

Here’s everything you need to know before your first wax.

Before Your Appointment: How to Prepare

A little prep goes a long way when it comes to waxing.

Grow your hair to at least ¼ inch long.
That’s about the length of a grain of rice. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t grip properly.

 Take ibuprofen (if you’re able).
Taking ibuprofen about 60 minutes before your appointment can help minimize discomfort and inflammation.

Avoid waxing five days before or after your period.
Your skin is more sensitive during this time which can make waxing more uncomfortable. Yes, you CAN still wax during your period, we just advise for your first wax you try to avoid it.

 Exfoliate before your appointment.
Gently exfoliating 24-48 hours beforehand helps remove dead skin buildup and allows the wax to adhere better to the hair.

 Wear comfortable clothing.
Loose breathable fabrics are your best friend for body waxing. You’ll want to stick to comfortable breathable clothing and underwear for 24ish hours.

 Schedule smart.
Wax at least three days before any swimsuit plans or big events. This gives your skin time to calm down.

Prepare for a few deep breaths. The first appointment is always the most intense, but it truly gets better from there.

What to Expect After Your First Wax

Your skin has just experienced a form of superficial trauma, because of that, some redness and sensitivity can happen, especially if it’s your first time. This is totally normal.

The good news is with consistent appointments waxing becomes:

  • Faster
  • More comfortable
  • Less dense hair growth
  • Finer, more sparse regrowth

Consistency (every 4–6 weeks) is key.

What Is a Histamine Reaction?

One of the most common concerns after a first wax is something called a histamine reaction.

A histamine rash can happen to anyone. It’s caused by minor skin trauma (like hair being removed from the follicle), which increases blood flow and triggers a histamine release in the body.

This response can look different for everyone, but it may include:

  • Prolonged redness
  • Hives
  • Red bumps
  • Skin feeling warm, almost like a sunburn

Because of the warmth, some people mistake this for a burn. However, burns happen immediately from heat. A histamine reaction can show up slightly delayed.

How Long Does a Histamine Reaction Last?

Most reactions subside within 24–48 hours.

If you believe you’re experiencing a histamine response:

  • Apply Nezbit Smooth to calm and protect the area
  • Take a Benadryl (if you’re able)
  • Avoid heat and friction

In most cases symptoms fully resolve within a day or two.

How to Avoid a Histamine Reaction

Proper aftercare is essential, especially after your first wax.

For 48 hours post-wax avoid:

  • Hot showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs
  • Pools or ocean water
  • Tanning, sunbathing, or tanning beds
  • Intense workouts or heavy sweating
  • Sex or activities that introduce bacteria
  • Tight clothing

Instead:

✔ Wear clean, loose-fitting, breathable clothing
✔ Only apply products recommended by your waxer
✔ Use Nezbit Smooth at home to keep pores clean and supported

Important:
Do not exfoliate for 72 hours after your wax. After that exfoliate every 2–3 days using Nezbit Scrub to help prevent ingrowns and dead skin buildup.

The Bottom Line

Your first wax might feel intimidating but it’s the start of smoother skin, slower regrowth, and easier appointments moving forward.

With proper prep, consistent appointments (every 4–6 weeks), and the right home care routine, waxing becomes easier, quicker, and more comfortable over time.

Remember we’re here to guide you through every step, recommend the best aftercare products, and make sure you leave confident and comfortable.

Smooth skin starts with the right education.
