What is a histamine reaction?

A histamine rash can happen to anyone and is caused by “trauma” to the skin (in this case superficial skin trauma caused by waxing). A histamine response induces swelling and red coloring to the skin due to a boost in blood flow and release of histamine. Histamine reactions after waxing can look different for everyone. Since waxing (especially for first timers) can shock the hair follicle waxing may cause a histamine response. A histamine reaction could look like:
-Prolonged redness
-Hives
-Red bumps
-Skin feeling hot almost like a sunburn

How long does a histamine reaction last?

Redness, hives or blotchy red spots can be par for the course after waxing depending on your aftercare, skin, sensitivities and many other factors… A “normal” reaction can sometimes be mistaken for an allergic response and due to the heat associated with a histamine response can even feel like a “burn”. Burns are immediate responses to a heat source and do not come on delayed like a histamine response. It’s best to start by applying the Deck Polish if you think you’re having a histamine reaction and take a Benadryl if able. The symptoms should completely subside in 24-48 hours.

How to avoid a histamine reaction:

Practicing proper home care is essential to avoiding a histamine reaction. The following home care routine includes:

-Avoid hot showers, baths, steam rooms, hot tubs or saunas for 48 hours
-Avoid getting into pools or the ocean for 48 hours post wax.,
-Wear clean loose fitting clothes post wax (breathable underwear and looser pants are recommended for 24 hours post wax)
-Only apply products recommended by your waxer.
-No tanning, sunbathing, or tanning beds for 48 hours
-No sex or bacteria spreading events for 48 hours
-Avoid any intense workouts, or sweating for 48 hours.
-Use Deck Polish at home to keep the pores filled and clean.
-Don’t exfoliate for 72 hours post wax, but DO exfoliate every 2-3 days after that with Deck Scrub.
-Get waxed consistently avoiding long periods in between waxes. We recommend waxing every 4-6 weeks.
